In Reply to: Anyone know vifa part # for Snell II series replacements? posted by Will shade on February 1, 2006 at 18:10:01:
Dear Will,The tweeters in the Snell J and E are Tonegen not Vifa AND they are no longer an available standard part, their original no was 94C70DS-00HD.
Tonegen was merged with Foster in Japan a few years ago and production transferred to Taiwan, in 2005 production moved to China.
I hope the above catalogue number helps you, if not come back to me, our current tweeters are similar in characteristics to the old Tonegen, but about 6 dB more efficient, so you need to rework the crossover settings a little to get a good balance.
Sincerely,
Peter Qvortrup

The nearest equivalent I could find online were for Tonegen 94C7DDS00HD - one letter off (D rather than O) from the parts number you gave me. From the blurry picture I found, they do look exactly the same as my tweeters.I really appreciate your offer to sell me one of your tweeters if I'm really in a bind. When you say I might have to 'rework the crossover settings,' are you referring to the inductor? I know a replacement woofer from Snell comes with a custom-wound inductor, and that your own company also custom winds your inductors. But I half-recall Wally from Snell, who handles upkeep of their classic speakers, telling me that the value of the inductor on the tweeter stayed the same. It might be I misunderstood him. I guess what I'm wondering is, even if I were to find off the shelf tweeters for my Snells, will it sound off balance without the customized inductor? Or perhaps when you refer to the crossover you're referring to one or more of the other components.
While we're at it, I'd be curious to hear your fix for the chipboard front baffle disintegrating from removing the drivers one too many times. A couple of the driver screws no longer hold well. I recently asked this question on another board.
