For a surround system. I heard some small industrial looking JBL's recently and like these
Is there anything else out there?
Further to KlausR post, yyu can always try the outstanding small Genelec 8030, outstanding sound for the price and does not look too bad either.
Music making the painting, recording it the photograph
If you're in Tokyo check out either Geronimo's or Mogambo, Roppongi bars (near Roppongi crossing, www.mogambo.net, www.geronimoshotbar.com)
PA systems are Tube front end and with active speaker back end; (JBL's) quite "low buck" but a damn good sound nevertheless
Clearly this is the way ahead
Or another pro sound store. You'll see all kinds of powered monitors such as KRK, Fostex, Tannoy, JBL and so on; most of the brands mentioned by Klaus.
Active pro speakers rule! I've lately grown weary of the "audiophile" recessed midrange/smiley face voicing. Gimme a flat response speakers any day, and let ME tame the room...I don't like speakers being tone controls. :)
can't believe Klaus forgot them!
I also forgot Event, and maybe others.
One brand I would buy my eyes closed, but which is probably not available in Asia, is Geithain (see pic).
If interested in surround, you might also wanna try searching for a model that has an "auto-on" feature, which turns the speaker on in the presence of a signal. Otherwise, you'll have to get up and manually turn ALL your speakers on and off every single time you want to listen. I use a Panamax 2000 switcher for the front 3 channels, but decided to go with more conventional passive speakers for the surrounds.
And don't forget...you'll need an outlet near EACH speaker in order to provide power.
