I just last night bypassed the 4700uf 6SN7 heater reservoir caps in the linestage of my P4 monos;After the diode bridge (mundorf mlytics) with some Blackgate N types at 220uf.
Holy SH*** the increase in soundstage depth width and resolution is absolutely phenomenal!
How possibly or more to the point, how do the damned heaters have such a dramatic effect on the overall sound?

mashley,I have personally discovered that changes on the heater circuit on INDIRECT tubes powered by AC are audible. I have personally altered the sound by changing the heater wire and also the power supply cable. My heaters have a separate power cable.
So do not think of it as an unbelievable phenomenon. I'm glad you discovered it by yourself. You can also play with the wires, transformers and polarity (by swapping the heater pins of each tube and listen).

You may not be able to put with the increase in 60Hz hum but you should try plain old AC on those 300B filaments. Healthier for the tubes and sounds much better than unregulated DC supply.
High frequency diode switching noise is not much attenuated by eledtrolytics due to their relatively large ESR. That noise - possibly at ultrasonic frequencies - is easily coupled to the adjacent cathode capacitively. Once in the tube, intermodulation with the audio is plausible.
I can see no mechanism for the heaters to have any effect at all on the sound except for adding noise.Just a bridge with a large cap following it will give a saw tooth ripple and often add more audible noise than AC would. (a "buzz" instead of a hum)
A bridge followed by a critical inductance choke and then a cap will give a lot less ripple and the ripple that remains will be sinusoidal and thus easier to listen to even if some of it "leaks" into the music.
Are you sure the heater voltage is the same as it was before the change?
High or low heater voltage will definitely change the sound of a tube stage.
A tube needs the proper amount of heat for the cathode to emit electrons at the proper rate to maintain a proper electron cloud.
That's the only thing I can think of to account for what you're reporting.

Really didn't think adding such a small cap in comparison to 4700uf would affect voltage particularly.
Ok, that's good to hear I'll now look into fine tuning the voltage.
You don't need to fine tune. +/- 5% is within spec.
If the voltage is close then that's not it.
