I always had the input transformer.
I had a 12B4 preamp but am in the
process of changing to a 6AH4.
Without the input transformer -
If you use the 6J5 then 1.5V input
will peak the output tube.
If you use the 6P5 then 2V input
will peak the output tube.
100K seems a good value since
1 meg is the limit.DanL

Please keep us posted about the 6AH4 set up, Dan.
I have a slew of those as their parameters intrigued... {also have a lot of those 6S4's as I thought for awhile would make good input tube but have shied away from that project since the mighty 801 has proved so outstanding in so many ways... a gross of 841's and I would be set for life.

I built a 6AH4 preamp for someone else and
found they like at least 20mA to open up.
I used 2 D NiCad on the cathode and
100V on the plate choke with cap coupling.
Worked out to 80Vpk and 30mA operating point.
Sound was like a 6SN7 with a 6BL7 drive.
Clean like a 12B4 but richer and better layered.
