So my guess is that you are right.
The "power amp mode" switch probably bypasses at least one stage of voltage amplification.
I would really like to see a schematic.

So that, to me, clearly indicates that the built in preamp is bypassed with the switch.

The sensitivity changes from 230mV to 1000mV
so that confirms a loss of a gain stage.
Although only a gain of just over 4.

I missed that.
Now is sounds like the power amp input just goes through a attenuator and doesn't bypass anything.
I would really like to see a schematic.
