300 b and 845 for Cary 805 AE

I am looking for recommendations for the 300b and 845 tubes for my Cary 805ae. Currently using the supplied 300b and a Psvane 845 t, also have a pair of GE 211s. Checked out the archives but info is 5-10 years old. Thanks.

In 845s I've used Psvane T2 and can tell you that WE845 is a decent step up. In fact, I have not heard a better 845 and I've tried many including well respected NOS. Just don't run them above 80mA.

Haven't tried a wide enough variety of 300Bs to provide a meaningful recommendation.

  Within reason, I'm willing to pay for any new production, Elrog,EML, Takasaki, but not the crazy NOS prices that I've seen $5000 for WE 300bs.

      Thanks for the input Will the Elrogs are on my short list, a little concerned about reliability from some reports I've read. Where did you get yours from?

        Some how this one got past me. Sorry for the late reply. I have had mine maybe 9 months and so far have had no issues. Replaced a blown PSvane. I love the sound so far.
        
        Got them from Tubes USA. Cost a small fortune, but we only live once so I said what the Hell.

    fwiw...I have the 805AE also.
    
    I have pairs of 300b: KR balloons, WE, EML (mesh and solid), Sophia Princess Mesh and Gold Lion that I use in my SET's. I've liked them all in my Cary's but liked the KR's and Sophia's the most.
    
    That's based on my ears/taste. Is there a direction you want to take the sound for your ears/taste?

      I only use the Carys from around 300hz and up, my speakers are biamped. Tonally it's pretty good but could be better. Biggest issue is it needs to be more fleshed out, side to side imaging is excellent, but depth front to back isn't great and it just doesn't have the in the room presence that I know these amps are capable of. I did change the input tube to an ECC 32 and that was a big step forward across the board. Thanks for your input.

        Cary sold its amps with paper in oil coupling capacitors which I found to be poor. If you have such capacitors in place, you could try some Teflon or polystyrene capacitors to see if you like the amps better - it makes a big difference.
