You could also look at the Music First Audio "Baby Reference" preamp which got unanimous glowing praise at an audio show. Warren Jarret is the AN dealer in California and also dealer for Baby Reference. He also has a standing offer to anyone in California for a full free home demo of any AN gear and MFA gear no strings. His offer is over on the Steve Hoffman Forums.
I would love to hear that preamp -
I really like the M6 and Empress combo more than any of the 300B from Audio Note (or 300B from anyone for that matter).
Here is the Hoffman thread.

It turns out that the passive preamp I mentioned that i would listen to this week is just the one you mention (Music First...) only it has dual channel controls...and costs a bundle, i was told.

Let me know what you think. Unfortunately, I have to buy one to hear one and while it may be more neutral to some - that doesn't necessarily make it better over the long run. SS is more neutral than ANY tube at ANY price according to the measured results but here we are in the SET forum.
CBP was right. The output impedance of the CDP is too high in an audible part of the bass. Everything was dead there.
In the short term, my problems are solved with the use of SS preamp I have in my collection. But I am in my small summer place and don't have the energy to move everything (large high-sensitivity speakers) down here to listen to all the combinations, so everything i hear comes out of an LS3/5A, which doesn't do so well on 83dB sensitive speakers. They need 8-10W to sound good.

The Empress is nice, but i already have a 2A3 amp from Fi Audio and I like the more neutral sound, compared to AN. I bought the Conqueror Silver to replace a Meishu Silver that was just to cumbersome to move around.
Thanks for the tip on the Music First. Unfortunately, I live in Denmark from 20 years ago!
