After reading your post, I must open my "yap" and say, I don't understand what problem you're trying to solve. In my opinion, for me, I find simpler to be better and the Kevin Carter LS is anything but simpler. My Line Stage is a very simple 5687 with output taken from the plate and driving 300b amps with 100k input. Works for me. Very well.
Follow Ups:
The sonics. I "fixed" the gain problem. When played through an all AN system and even with different speakers (but all the rest AN), it sounds like a blanket has been thrown over it and the sound stage is gone.
I was hoping to hear from AN equipment owners who didn't have an all AN system.
I guess the number is few.
Observe, before you think. Think before you open your yap. Act on the basis of experience.
I won't go into "matching equipment" from different makers - maybe that's a red herring.
If you just want good sonics, go back to basics. Use a good DHT. Plenty of 26 preamp designs around now. Only thing better than that is a 4P1L preamp, which is a bit special. Believe me, I've been through preamps with all the DHTs - 10Y, 71A, 01A, 112A and a long list of lesser known DHTs. The 26 and 10Y are formidable options, but I think of all of them I'd take the 4P1L.
So if you get the tube right you get the potential of the best sonics. You then just have to play around with the circuit. I'd say filament bias is an imperative and I'd use an LL1660 in a configuration that suits your setup. You won't get anything commercial with this purist configuration - you'd have to build it or get somebody to build it. Not rocket science. I've built at least a dozen preamps like this. I don't build any more - I have my 2 stage 4P1L > PSE 4P1L amp and that's all I need or want. Nothing I ever built in 40 years comes close.
Andy, do you mean that you are now using all 4P1Ls----one for line stage duty, one for amp driver, and two for PSE output? I thought I recalled your saying a while back that you liked having a 26 in the mix. Do you have a link to the circuit you are now using?
I have followed your posts about DHT linestages and output drivers with great interest. I haven't tried either of them yet but intend to do so.
"Andy, do you mean that you are now using all 4P1Ls----one for line stage duty, one for amp driver, and two for PSE output?"
No - just 2 stages. My DAC outputs about 2v, and goes straight into the amp, no line stage. Amp is 4P1L > LL1660 > PSE 4P1L (2 in parallel). Remember that the 4P1L has a mu of around 10, so 2 stages gets you a pretty decent amount of amplification if your speakers are reasonably sensitive. I have full-range Alpair 10s in columns. I don't need an extra stage. The LL1660 is configured as 4:4.5, just a bit more than 1:1.
