Room size and room acoustics are part of the equation here. I have used 45 amps in small(10 x 12) to mid size rooms(12 x 18) with speakers of 92 to 96 dB and was pleased with the sound. I also used a 45 amp in a large room (18 X 30) with 105 dB speakers with excellent results.
Your personal taste comes into play as well. My tastes are jazz, vocals and world music, and I don't care about feeling the bass line in my chest. Someone wanting large scale orchestral fireworks or metal might find my systems lacking.
Follow Ups:
My room is 12x16. I have similar tastes including solo and small scale classical.
Rethm speakers have active bass so the amp is only driving a 5" paper cone w/ a whizzer.
The system sensitivity is rated at 97 db.
I have a very nice midfi Rotel Klipsch system when I need some SRV.
Thanks for putting me onto Sonic_oli, I'll get in touch with him when I'm ready to get the project underway.
I had a very similar size room and ran KCS Fostex F200A speakers, about 92 dB. I ran it with 300B, 10Y and 45 amps. All sounded good, just different flavors. From the specs on the Rethm speakers, they should do great with a 45.
