Hard to beat a Type 45 SE .
Learn to build your 45 amp better,.... far better supply, better wiring, attention to detail, and you will never question it again.
MOST Type 45 amps are built poorly, as are most all the other SETs I see and hear!!

Jeff, I am sure you have heard a lot of 45 (good and poor amps), but have you heard a poorly made a 845 low powered SET amp?
I guess comparing apples to apples, a poorly build 45 to a poorly build 845SET, what would sounds better?
Bottom Line - I love 45; and the 2A3. A good design, attention to details, a very high quality parts, good chassis materials, meticulous wiring routes, good grounding methods, IT or even direct coupled, good choice of driver tube; etc. will surely differentiate a good 45 amp from a poorly build 45 amp. But is it all out there? Why not build something that could be better than the simple 45? I know simplicity has it's values and it shows a lot of merits in that but........

James
Horses for courses. I LOVE the sound of the 845 at low power and I'm wondering if there isn't a nice build out there we should be collaborating on. Wait, "collaborating"? Oops forget that. Anyway, Bottlehead has apprenatly released a low power 845 HEAD PHONE AMP?! WTF?? For 10,000??!! It is spelled "Bottlehead" not, "Audionote". Anyway, hope they do ok, but I'd rather see a kit.
"a low power 845 HEAD PHONE AMP?! WTF?? For 10,000??!!"
It's really not necessary to use such a costly topology to create an excellent headphone amplifier. The miniscule power needed for phones means a great many power tubes we might otherwise consider not so linear can be operated in an extremely small and linear region of their curve. Even small, single-ended pentodes like the 6BQ5, 6V6, 6AQ5, etc. can produce exquisite sound under these conditions.
