In Reply to: RE: JJ 2A3-40: Anyone use these in a Sun Audio SV-2A3?(nt) posted by samtellig on February 16, 2015 at 17:27:23
Hi,Not in a Sun amp, I certainly will be using a pair in my up-coming two stage DC 2A3 amp build, after getting months and months of good reports about them from an early adapter of this tube, Dennis Fraker.
Unlike most vintage 2A3s, the JJ 2A3-40 has a very nice symmetrical filament structure, and Dennis tells me it is probably the 2A3 "audio performance bargain" of our times. RC Daniel gave us herein a nice description as a "plug in and play". I believe, if you DIY tune an amp to them, ( with Rk film cap bypass choices, and good wiring, etc. ) it has potential to perform even better.
From what I understand, even at the "plug and play" level, you probably won't regret the choice.
My two new JJs sound quite different from each other ( out of the amp !! ) when I tap them and hold the glass to my ear. One structure goes BOING with more low level harmonics, and an apparent looseness of constuct, whereas the other is tighter, approaches more-so a PING sound.
For SE use, I want both to tap-test equally. I will buy five or six more, and try to get one or, if lucky, two pairs to match, and sell-off the rest. ( We audio people have "Hitchcock 539" - tattooed on our ear lobes, in VERY small script, so as not to offend or upset the many non-audio folks. ) :-)
" This is Sam Tellig, the sound you are about to hear ".......very nice to meet you !!

Adding hum pots to your amplifier would make buying and changing tubes less onerous.
I;d go with Jim McShane, but I gather he is not so keen on some other JJ tubes.
Very nice to meet you, too. Now that I no longer review I can listen at leisure to what I like.
I'm looking for A quad as well.
I rang Jim for these last week and he doesn't deal JJ's.
Try Eurotubes. Matched pairs or quads with a warranty!
I already have a lifetime stock in case these become extinct.
They were better than the EML's I had by at least 30%

I use Antique Electronic Supply in AZ. Good folks. The JJ 5U4GB is also a good sounding rectifier tube.

+1 on AES. Good testing and matching.
