Mr. Steady,
I guess I wasn't clear in my original post: I went ahead and ordered the Audio Note Kit 1.
I did a lot used market Internet lurking on Audiogon, US Audio Mart and Asylum Trader. I was most tempted by an Art Audio PX-25 (with added volume control!) on Audiogon (that's still for sale). The guy wants $2800 for it, but it has a humming PX-25 tube on it and a matched set of KR PX 25's is $500+ right now, so that whole package would've blown my budget. S'posed to be a great amp, though.
I also took a hard look at the (relatively) new Coincident Dynamo 34SE, which sells direct for $1299 shipped and has been getting great reviews. But I decided to make the leap to $300b/DHT to see what all the fuss was about.
Oh... forgot to mention I was pretty sold at one point on the Decware "Rachael," which, like th Coincident Dynamo, is also a single-ended EL 34 implementation.

rebbi,
My mistake. I hope you have fun building the amp! And because you build it, then you can upgrade those parts at will. Have at it.
I'm sure you will enjoy it.
Jamie
Big speakers and little amps blew my mind!
Jamie,
No problem! And thanks for the good wishes.
There's also just the sheer fun of assembling something; you're always a part of it after that. Plus, in my "day job" I don't get to work with my hands very much and I find that this kind of project brings me a certain kind of fun/happiness that's good for my head. :-)
