The move from an 811 to an 511 horn will have far more effect on sound quality then any move from just about ANY competently designed SET, Jeff.

Follow Ups:
Altecs 1.4" 288 driver mated to the 511 just kills any of their 802/806/902s with the 811.
Likewise, JBL 2" driver 2446 mated to the outrageously large 2360a is even better. Is there something going on here sizewise?

Except that the standard 511B is a 2 bolt 1" throat horn while the 288 is a 3 bolt 1.4" exit driver. Not easy to put together.
There is a rare 511E variant with a 3 bolt flange and shorter length but it's not likely to find a pair.

No.
I was attempting to draw a corollary for Jeff that any improvement in our amplifiers pales in comparison to speakers... and in turn speakers, Pale in comparison to improvements in the ROOM. Jeff makes claim to the near mystical properties of the 12AX7 {properly implemented with his proprietary flooby dust} direct coupled to a 2A3 as, be all, END all sound. I have heard excellent sound from many circuits. I believe no two people hear exactly the same, furthermore, no two people appreciate the same in sound.
Perhaps, Jeff thinks differently.

Yes !!! But the effect would NOT be in a positive way.
What the heck are you talking about?? On a A7, "nix to the 511" according to Greg Monfort ( aka "GM" ) and Dennis Fraker, both of who are uber experienced and uber smart, audio geniuses, and who I would implicitly trust.

You must be listening in a 10 by 8 foot room with a 7 ft. ceiling, Jeff.
Basically, Tractrix and/or Constant Directivity ... and the bigger the horn... the better. If one is striving to hold on to bass in the midrange...stay with an exponential. These are basic axiomatic truths.
There are however, many opinions.
