In Reply to: RE: WAVAC MD-805m 55-Watt SET monoamps posted by Kloss on September 20, 2014 at 07:18:58
I offered them on A-Gon this spring; the highest offer I got was $8300 IIRC. (I paid $12K.) Oh well...maybe that's a good thing, as I still have them.
"If enjoying the sound why mess about." Because hi-end audio isn't about 'If it's not broke, don't fix it'. I think we'll all agree that there are degrees of excellence in reproduced music, and I'm not one to tolerate what I perceive as poor parts in expensive amps. I've managed, sometimes with lots of help from others, to improve the sound quality of virtually all pieces of electronic stuff in my music-reproduction system, and the very-high sound quality (in my and many others' opinions) is a result of that money and effort.
And I don't care much about resale value. Said another way, I don't buy equipment with an eye to selling it.
Probably I'll let these continue to warm until after the Club meeting and then order some parts, starting probably with the output-stage PS.

Are Nichicons considered cheap, bad caps? I was under the impression that they are sort of high end standard. Obviously not Black Gates but you see what amps decked out with those cost (look at the upper Audio Note UK models). My guess is that most of the cost of this amp is in the transformers, the chassis and of course the name ;-).
The power supply looks like it has a nice choke in it but I am a bit disappointed to see that it is not tube rectified. Still, I wanted to try a pair a while back but the measurements I have seen from Wavac amps suggests that they use too small a core for the output transformer and there is rather gross distortion in the bass as a result. Don't know about this particular model though.
As to resell value, I have been having problems moving gear lately for the prices i think are fair. Only no offer or low ballers.
Anyway, I am surprised it took you so long to bring them back out to try on your new speakers. How do the WAVACs compare to the modded Frankensteins?
Why ask a ? if you already made up your mind. Are you just doing the normal I need someone to agree with what I'm doing post? I seem to have wasted time with this thread good luck.
Maybe I was looking for someone to write something like 'I can't believe anyone would modify a current WAVAC amp, but I'd love to see and hear about the results'. Or something.
Oh well.

But, I'd love to see and hear about the results
