I have been enjoying my new MP301 MK3 amplifier I had been reading the review of people that own them and had trouble finding many that had negative things to say about them. Then I figured for $399 to my door I wasn't taking to much of a chance on it, well so far I have had it about a week and am loving it. I was curious if there is anyone here that has one of these ? The speakers I have it matched up to(Tri-Trix kit) I understand are not the best match, the designer Curt told me they are rated sensitivity about 84db@1watt/1meter & 87dB@2.8v/1meter but they sound pretty damn nice. My question is as far as I have been able to read from owner reviews this amp seems to really come to life changing the tubes from 6L6 to a pair of KT-88's which also brings the amp from 6.5 wpc to about 9.5 wpc . Will this make much of a difference with these speakers ? Or should I invest the $$ for the tubes towards a speaker better matched to this type of amplifier. I am a total "newbie" with this type of amplifier and such minimal wpc. I know this is the SET Asylum but I guess an SEP amp is sort of the same animal. Any advice would be helpful. I know its a Canadian/Chinese amp but it seems to be well built and have decent parts for the cost, I figured it would be a good way to get my foot in the "tube door" for a small investment and a big WAF :^)

A bigger bang will; be putting some RCA 5693s in the driver section.
Thanks Chip I will look around for a decent priced pair, I had read that on one of the reviews the guy was talking RCA metal tubes.
It all depends on the electrical load the speakers present to the amp. But that information is rarely available unless a speaker is reviewed and measured. if the speakers are rated at 8 ohms nominal, that may be a hint that you are OK. In general, speakers that have more than 2 drivers are harder to drive than 2-ways (2=just treble and bass/midrange drivers/cones), but have a wider frequency response.
The amplification boost you are talking about is pretty considerable and if the speakers present a reasonably easy load to the amp, yes it will make a difference. However, the KT88 will sound "different" than the 6L6.
But it's worth a try. Invest in some decent tubes. Shuguang GEKT88 are quite nice for the money. The New Sensor Gold Lion KT88 "remakes" are a "better" tube, many say, but more expensive.
Observe, before you think. Think before you open your yap. Act on the basis of experience.
What are the negative responses?
How was the power increase measured? I would expect a lot of bandwidth limiting based on the size of the iron, especially at higher power levels. This would be easy to measure.
