Here is another, more detailed, article on DC on the power line.
However, I would suggest that before you assume that is the problem, experiment to find out what is causing the problem. It may be some other device on the same AC mains branch circuit that is dumping noise into the power line. Find a branch that has only incandescent light bulbs (without dimmers)on it and power the system from that branch. If that works okay you can go back to the original branch and start unplugging other devices until the problem goes away.

Thank you for the reference to this article--this will also require some careful study. Perhaps it isn't DC as you suggest. Our house is quite small--about 400 square feet--and there are really only two circuits available, apart from those dedicated to range, dryer, and refrigerator. The buzz, while varying in strength, never completely ceases, so it isn't coincident with the use of some device or lamp (unless it be the refrigerator). For the three hours at my friend's house--sweet relief, dead quiet.
