Dave
The mac mc60s I have use a pair of 5u4s..I could make conversion sockets if it would handle the current..What do you think? I put motorruns in under the chasis.
If the power supply waveform isn't pretty, neither is the sound in most cases.
You will also need to allow for the filaments to preheat and provide some sort of gently ramp-up of the B+.
what kind of filter follows the 5U4?

Dave here is the schematic
Im uisng all motorrun caps under the chasis.I have a 70uf after the paralleld 5u4 rectfiers into the choke and a 100uf paralled with a 50uf MR after the choke.I use an inrush current limiter on any Directly Heated or SS rect.

I'm going to guess that the 83 isn't going to be very happy seeing that 70uf of capacitance even with a slow startup. You could rewire it for a pair of 394A's and use a battery to switch them on and you might be OK but that 70uf is going to still be harsh on startup. My gut feel is getting mercury to work in this situation might be a bit of a kludge.
