Steeleye Span with a drop dead gorgeous vocal. Folk as it should be....Maddy Prior on the vocal

(which Anderson and crew did, of course) after Span had blown our minds. I had never heard of them...ca. 1972 (?) San Diego.Light projected downward with the group standing as individually lit obelisks; you heard Maddy singing a capella. The entire look and sound very weird and eerie had everyone mesmerized.
Suddenly, they went into a whirling jig around the stage and the tassels that had hung over them, creating that obelisk effect, flew out as they continued to spin around. The Celtic sounds of the band washed over us, causing us to rise from our seats along with them.
I was instantly in love with their music.
I have a test record of Silly Sisters that is awesome. I think I'll play Commoner's Crown right now, though. For those who have never seen the cover, those are hundreds,if not thousands of human figures climbing up the sides of the crown...great cover!
There is no such thing as too many records.
There is just too little room for them!

I've been in love with her voice since I first heard "Below the Salt" in '72.
I liked the stuff she did in early SS with Gay Wood (their first album)s and then a few years back on a powerhouse SS album called TIME in which their voices just bob and weave and soar.
No video but you can hear the songs (all primo stuff) at this linky.
Give a listen to YOU WILL BURN.
Turn it way up
I think my favorite with Gay Woods is "All Things are Quite Silent" from Hark! The Village Wait. Actually IMO the whole album is good for Woods.
Thanks for the link. Have you heard Silly Sisters, where she sings with June Tabor? She another great voice.
and Tabor is a fine singer. Have you ever heard the EP she did with the Oyster Band? They are playing together again apparently, I found this video whil looking for the older stuff they did...
Yes, I have the CD "Freedom and Rain" on which this cut appears. There is so much good music in this genre.
this song was from letters written by a father in Ireland to his son who went to America...
never to return to see the old man. It is, bar none, the saddest song I ever have heard and man, I have heard many. There are 2 versions, the first is new to me, the second is the one that I use when I've tipped the Single Malt and get to feeling homesick....but...as they say, you can't go home again.
Some may prefer this version, I certainly do.
The bass player, Ray Cooper, used to play in Amazorblades back in Brighton with Ben Mandelson now of Billy Bragg's Blokes.
If you ever (and it's unlikely) come across a recording of THEM ,it is an awakening experience.
Some weeks I couldn't get them out of my house... ;-)
