...I wouldn't go that far.
The Stones started out as a blues band (as opposed to the Beatles pop sound) so the mostly unfamiliar music on this album is much more a part of their DNA.
The critics have pretty much universally praised the album.
I like it a little more with each listen, but the sound is a little too ragged and raw for me - it's not 1963 anymore.
Follow Ups:
I think it's more a late 50's sound and more of a tribute to some great bluesman of the time. Here's a plan - put the record on early at your party at very low volume, no one will even know who it is but it has a great rhythm to it. Nice table setter. Later, after some Jimmy Reed or Muddy Waters or The Record Company, or Nathaniel Radclif, crank it up. Folks just need a little familiarity to get the groove. Worked in my house last week.
if it's meant to sound like it was recorded in 1963 then I'm not.
The "Ride 'em Down" video is pathetic.
"Once this was all Black Plasma and Imagination" -Michael McClure
...listen to it for yourself.
I don't watch videos.
