Have the feeling if we took all the AA posters that are professional musicians AND label owners and totaled
their combined sales just since AA launched the figure would be well below three
million - excluding anyone that played. say, in the brass section of "Phantom" or such.Frampton sounded GREAT playing with Bowie - cool cats.

Three million in sales of anything is a success, at least to me. But to a record company who's anticipating probably four times that, apparently not.
and it's just further proof what idiocy that business always has been, is, and will remain.
There was never enough for the record companies. Never.

This is true, although I believe the situation has gotten much worse over the years.
I read something once, that if Frank Zappa were just coming up now, that he'd never get a record contract. Maybe Frank said it himself in an interview. I think during the mid to late 1960s to early 1970s, the record companies were more willing to take a chance on a new artist than they are now.
Just think how much the music world would have been denied if Zappa had never been given an opportunity.
releasing his own material hell or high water and gathering a dedicated band that would follow him into the fray.
Some people have so much music, motivation, stamina and drive to them that pretty much nothing will deter them from pursuing their art.

Looks like I have some homework to do.
Ok, I'm back. Whew, I'm going to have to get back to that article after work. There's a lot there!
