Early Fleetwood Mac guitarist Bob Welch was found dead Thursday afternoon (June 7) from what police are describing as a self-inflicted gun shot wound. According to the Associated Press, the 65-year-old Welch shot himself in the chest inside his Nashville-area home. The rocker was a part of the group from 1971 to 1974, before the band really took off with the ‘Fleetwood Mac’ and ‘Rumours’ albums. He was a part of ‘Future Games (1971), ‘Bare Trees (1972)’ and ‘Mystery to Me (1973).’ Those weren’t immediate commercial successes, but they went on to achieve Gold or Platinum certification in the U.S. After recording ‘Heroes Are Hard to Find’ he was replaced by Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks.
After leaving Fleetwood Mac he formed a rock band called Paris before beginning a solo career. His 1977 album ‘French Kiss’ was his most successful project, featuring the song ‘Sentimental Lady,’ which was originally recorded as a Fleetwood Mac song in 1972. He continued to write and record music of different styles until his death.
Controversy arose when Welch was not included among the members of Fleetwood Mac inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. He told the Cleveland Plain Dealer, “It was an important period in the history of the band. Mick Fleetwood dedicated a whole chapter of his biography to my era of the band and credited me with ‘saving Fleetwood Mac.’ Now they want to write me out of the history of the group. It hurts.”
The AP reports that Bob Welch was found dead by his wife around 12:15PM. He had been suffering from health issues and left a suicide note.

Saw him at the Greek Theatre opening for Santana in (maybe) 1981/2?
Didn't expect much but it was a great set. Always enjoyed his stuff with
Fleetwood Mac and the hits he had.
Hope he's found peace.

So many dumb people with smart phones...
his Paris albums are worth digging up and he had a string of hits with his solo ventures. Saw him live touring in support of FRENCH KISS album and the show was great. One of those people who just dropped off the radar for a long time. Too sad.
I had a long ongoing email discussion with him about Hypnotized and how he learned about flying in Mexico and not needing an airplane and things flying past your window and it went on from there into paranormal and unknown areas and the perception of such. A class guy....and he KNEW>
t's the same kind of story
That seems to come down from long ago
Two friends having coffee together
When something flies by their window
It might be out on that lawn
Which is wide, at least half of a playing field
Because there's no explaining what your imagination
Can make you see and feel
Seems like a dream
They got me hypnotized
Now it's not a meaningless question
To ask if they've been and gone
I remember a talk about North
Carolina and a strange, strange pond
You see the sides were like glass
In the thick of a forest without a road
And if any man's ever made that land
Then I think it would've showed
Seems like a dream
They got me hypnotized
They say there's a place down in Mexico
Where a man can fly over mountains and hills
And he don't need an airplane or some kind of engine
And he never will
Now you know it's a meaningless question
To ask if those stories are right
'Cause what matters most is the feeling
You get when you're hypnotized
Seems like a dream
They got me hypnotized
Always loved the FM "Future Games" & "Bare Trees" efforts.
Those IMHO are the two best FM albums of all time. Still very listenable.
Musetap, was also in the house for that Berkeley Greek Theatre concert. Which was in September '78. Same day as Kenny "the Snake" Stabler's Holy Roller to Dave "the Ghost" Casper, which beat San Diego's stunned Chargers (in John Madden's last year coaching the Raiders, btw). Got a copy of Fleetwood Mac's 1974 KSAN Live Show from Dig Music's Dennis Newhall. Derived from a Warner Brothers promotional album sent to stations in 1975, it was obsolete upon arrival as Welch was out & Lindsey Buckingham & Stephanie Nicks had already replaced him. Some of the broadcast studio banter, & false start on "Sentimental Lady", had been edited out, also. Welch paved the way for the band's transition from Brit blues rockers to West Coast Big Mac Attack! R.I.P. also to Welch's "Mystery To Me" guitar mate Bob Weston, who passed away in January! R.I.P. Bob Welch!!!
