Lots of serious young men with beards in the background of the Bothy Band gig, i wonder how many pints of Guiness they need before they start to get up and jig a bit.
I prefer the Uillean pipes when they play a more plaintive refrain. My favourite album of all time is Mike Oldfield's Ommadawn and Paddy Moloney plays a 4 minute piece on the Uillean pipes with Mike accompanying him with acoustic guitar and it is stunning.
Follow Ups:
with both Paddy Keenan & Davy Spillane together. Davy's Atlantic Bridge is one of the best sounding records you can find. Michael Fremer still uses it in his turntable and cartridge reviews. I turned him on to it in 1987!! Read the liner notes at the link below....you can still find it on Vinyl if you look for it....
I've never heard two going at it together, it sounds really good.
I've got a fair few Irish folk records that all sound superb. For one thing i think it's fairly easy to mike up acoustic instruments but also a lot of Irish music was recorded at Windmill Studios in Dublin which nearly always produced a fantastic sounding record.
Thanks for the clip and the link.
Donal Lunny has played in, been part of, produced so much of the great Irish folk of the last 35 years. His brother is also a producer but to a lesser extent.
I find anything with Donal's name attached will have great music and players but good sound as well.
My Tara label LP's sound just wonderful....Here are a few clips on Donal with various artists...
