What are the advantages/disadvantages to placing the equipment rack behind and between the speakers versus off to the side and in front of the speakers?
I have a 14x20x8 foot room, the speakers on a short wall, the system off to the left side and in front of the speakers, a bay window on the right side with heavy draperies. I also have a 7 foot opening next to the rack area directly and to the left of my sitting location, front door and bay window on the other long wall. The 7 foot opening will eventually be closed with French doors but that's down the road.
I'm in the process of redecorating the room, wallpaper removal, painting, carpet, etc and am just wondering what would be the best location for the equipment rack, I have the TT on a wall shelf and the rack is a simple homemade job, 4 - 1 inch threaded rods and MDF for shelves. No wife involved, just a gf so no headaches in that department.

Putting the system between the speakers is the way to go in order to make the cables as short as possible but you should use some low raise shelf pushed on the very back of the wall or it will affect the soundstage. In my experience and with all the kind of speakers, have a tall equipment stand between the speakers is always a bad idea (I know Ethan will not agree on this). Currently I'm using some not very tall rack (about 2 feet tall) on the left side and I'm running long speakers cables (12 ft). It's also a "no way" to put the rack in the corner as I've saw very often (especially with a turntable). My very humble opinion.

But why do you think this is bad? If it's out of the direct sound path, and the path of first reflections, I can't imagine why that placement is a problem.

The front of the room needs to be symmetrical, so put the rack behind the speakers, closer to the front wall you face when listening. Ideally the rack would be in the middle of the front wall, again for symmetry.

I assumed that would be the answer but remember hearing before not to have anything behind the speakers if possible. Ideally I suppose creating a space in the wall would be best and also possible, just a lot of work.
That being said eventually I'd like to finish my basement, it would mean lower ceilings, 7 foot compared to 8 but the width would only be a foot less and I could go longer if needed.
