Not really. The problem is there are no ROM drives that read SACD's except Blu-Ray. Our decision was based on the fact that in order to build the best red book and hi-rez DVD player on the market we could not use a conventional disc reading mechanism.
Blu-Ray is available as a ROM drive but there are many licensing and use issues we were not prepared to deal with. For those really interested in SACD they will have to settle on a standard drive mechanism and all its problems. Trade offs.
What do you mean when you say "ROM drive?" How is a ROM drive different than an ordinary drive that reads DVDs, CDs, and in some players, SACDs?
Great question. A ROM drive is 10% controllable by us where a standard CD or SACD drive is not. When manufacturers produce standard drives they build in all the speed controls, error correction, reading stuff etc. In other words, the commands we need to make a standard CD drive work are simple "do this", "do that" type commands and what we get out is a complete digital data stream, complete with clock etc.
The ROM drive gives us 100% control and we take advantage of it.
