What the linked article fails to realise is that Monster Cable has very little, if anything at all in common with the likes of the 'real' cable manufacturers such as Kimber and other genuine such brands.
As such it is little surprise to me that the so called audiophiles in the test found little if any differences between coat hangers and the highly marketed, extra shiny coat hangers flogged by Monster ;-)
Follow Ups:
This time comparing the coat hangers to the most expensive, exotic high end cables they can lay hands on.
To highlight the "differences," they should use only the most resolving source components, amplifiers, and speakers, and play only audiophile-approved recordings.
My five bucks says most of the self-proclaimed "golden ears" on the listening panel STILL won't be able to hear a difference between the hangers and the luxury wires.
Of course, cabling is not really the optimum audio application for coat hangers. They're too stiff and unwieldy. Where they excel is as replacement car radio antennas, after the neighborhood hoodlums break yours off.
In looking over the original post, Monster DOES have quite a bit in common with other cable sellers.
They DON'T make there own wire. The probably own NO manufacturing at all. The entire company is an office somewhere. The may have design and prototyping people. I'll bet that Monster is spec built by some factory on the other side of the planet, marked up substantially and sold thru mass market retailers.
At least BJC is honest with named wire/cable and do the fabrication mostly in-house. I bought one of the asian made HDMI thru 'em and it is perfect for TV.
Anyone could be a cable maker. Be it small, garage based or ordering by the the mile from a bigtime factory, just slap your name on it and ship.
Short runs of custom wire are probably REAL expensive. Thus the 1200$ I/Cs.
Too much is never enough
Not really surprised at all.
In blind tests virtually nobody (including violinists) can tell the difference between a Stradivarius and a decent new violin either.
Just being a clown of course.
ET
well, one of the supposed audio reviewers with a mega buck system flunked a blindfold test between monster speaker wire and his cabling. Maybe he should try to do the coat hanger test?
I was going to say something to this effect, but then I thought, why bother, then I saw you said it for me! ;)
If people think bent-up solid steel conductors made from pot metal with haphazard inter-core spacing and large distances between conductors is better than a commonly available zip cord (even Monster brand) then, well...
I think this is just audiophile clique monster mashing. Sure, some of their claims are fantastic - like "time correct windings". So what? are they the ONLY cable maker with fantastic claims? Audiophiles put down people with mid-fi gear for buying cables from a company with market speak then buy cables costing 10-100x as much from companies offering the same psuedo-science market speak.
Sigh.
Cheers,
Presto
FYI just for kicks I tried it a couple of years ago, along with zip cord IC and Romex.
Huge difference in sound.
Kidding. I have use solid bare copper which can be good.
But Egyptian llamas must be a new species.

M2.4 Speaker cable, and Mic Cable up against all comers. I'll bet you guys don't even know what that is!!!!!!!
LOL.
I made a pair of cables that was compared to the sigma retros and the guy who compared them thought the ones I made sounded better.
The monsters were much better than mine in one crucial detail: Packaging. That briefcase was awesome and much better than my plastic bag.
IMHO that time winding philosophy they have is flawed and tantamount to building a car without brakes and claiming a breakthrough by being able to survive the crash it takes to stop the car.
And the plastic bag is a hell of a lot easier to open!

Afterwards we discovered faith; it's all you need
Something I learned a long time ago, is that just because you call yourself an Audiophile, doesn't mean you have an ability to discriminate between a Sradivarius and a Toys R Us violin. Obviously you fall into the latter group.
Was this post misplaced Dave?
I use the classic view and this has your post replying directly to mine. Not sure I see any relation between the 2.
You are saying I am not an audiophile and cant figure out the difference in a toy violin and a real one because I made a cable that some guy compared to the Monster and he liked mine better??
Missfire...sorry!
I got the last pair of retro Gold IC's for my CDP to my tube buffer....what a tremendously musical, warm, dynamic and transparent cable. Truly first rate and the superior to many names dropped here and elsewhere on the threads.
Nope, never heard of it, but can you hang your jacket on em'.....?
That's the key criteria for any true audiophiles wife after all, you and I both know that they pay no mind to the length, it's the girth that counts ;-)
At least the coat hangers are solidcore....
Heck yeah, I'd take em' too, if only out of principle !!
