my buddy is a photographer and is looking to be able to capture the ambient sounds on location when he is shooting.what he wants, ideally, is something no larger than a camera with a decent-quality mic already built-in and preferably to record onto DAT.
he's put me in charge of locating such a device, so i humbly request that those of you who know what the hell you're talking about point me in the right direction.

Check out the Edirol R-1.

I second the Edirol R-1. I got one to replace my worn out portable Sony MD rec. I mostly record off the board but the bulit in mics actually sound pretty good. It records MP-3 and wav. formats w/ adjustable bitrate and has a neat little "mastering" setting (as well as some other effects) that can clean - up or enhance the sound. They are usable during recording or playback but unfortunatlely only one at a time.

My Old Sony Digital Camcorder has a pretty good set of mics.
It also outputs via firewire. Recordings are PCM. Not much different than DAT in quality. A little more flexible. For giggles plugged the audio inputs of the camcorder to the Control Room outs of my Soundcraft mixer and recorded a practice. I was so impressed, I take it to every gig for a board tape.
. . .flash and harddrive-based options would be great. the general budget is as cheap as possible. between 5 and 8 hundred, i'd say.
I better qualify my position from the outset. I hate the DAT format.
It is like a miniature VCR with spinning head and all. It is subject to all the unpleasant nasties you encounter with video tape. Unless for some reason you want DAT as the format, and I cannot for the life of me imagine why, investigate the other types of machines now becoming available for location work. Get the catalogs of Full Compass Systems, Sweetwater Sound, B & K, and any others you can think of and peruse. Marantz has the PMD670 Pro Digi Recorder using a 10GB microdrive and/or flashcards. SONY still makes the PCM-M1 portable DAT if you must. Sound Devices makes a nifty two track field recorder, 722. Prices for this range of goodies goes from a little under a grand to over $2650. and we have only scratched the surface. I don't sell any of this stuff or have a stake in what you buy. If you do purchase it is often convenient to have a relationship with your dealer in case of problems irregardless of warranties. May you and your photog buddy find the machine he needs. Happy hunting.
