I suspect that the upcoming automatic room eq. boxes (Audyssey MultEQ) will take a large step toward ameliorating room influence, thus enabling near field monitors to be used in the far field. Barring that, you'd need heavy room dampening to make listening to near fields in the far field enjoyable...but I'm doing that as I type. :)
