Maybe they mean transmission-line with the front of the cone driving the port? Hell, I don't know. I'm not aware of any 18" subwoofers that would benefit from "horn loading". Trying to control the dispersion/output of subwoofers with a horn is like putting toothpicks in front of a bulldozer. What sub are we talking about?
Meyer Sound (Berkeley, CA) has an interesting product... M3D cardioid subwoofer. I've heard these, and they work as advertised.
Hope I'm not off-topic...

Awww shucks, I don't think that's too far off topic.Over on prosoundweb.com there's been a group of big venue live soundguys talking up a storm about the cardoid sub technique.
Rear fire one of 3 subs, delay it, and place it properly in the room, and the results are phenomial (to those who have heard it). Makes sense, cancelling the rear wave "spill". I'm anxious to try it as soon as I get time and a room/job big enough that I deal with multiple subs.
