I need a simple PCI sound card that does really excellent A/D and D/A from a single set of RCA phono inputs and outputs. That's all it needs to do. I know there's no such thing any more, but the less extra stuff the better.I'm archiving recordings of music from analog tape decks that don't have balanced XLRs (Revox A77 and Nakamichi Dragon). I already have a fair amount invested in high-quality RCA interconnects.
Up until now, I've been using a Digigram VXPocket V2 in my laptop and I've been satisfied with the results. Now I'm moving to a desktop system and I want something of similar or better quality.
I'm also open to suggestions for FireWire and/or USB 2.0 devices if anyone thinks those are more suited to the application.
Follow Ups:
For simple PCI cards, I recommend the Lynx 22, RME DigiPAD or E-MU 1212m. While I have not directly compared them, they always get the best comments that I've seen. I own the RME and it is very good. If I was to upgrade, I'd go with the Lynx. I don't know how the 1212m compares to the RME, but I think the Lynx card will be better than both.As far as Firewire goes, these get the most recommendations for highest quality sound. The Aurora is new, but based on Lynx Studio's reputation with their Lynx2 cards, it should be great sounding.

I am less clear on the best USB solutions. Search the PC Audio Asylum for many discussions on this, mostly about playback.
Hope this helps.
