IM interested in knowing your guys take,.or favorites on large format studio monitors.I know alot has changed in monitor speakers in general
over the last decade or so...
The control room that we are designing here is D shaped, with the aim
of mixing board centered between the two large speakers which will be sunk into the wall on either sides of the double glass that looks into the main studio
We will be recording, jazz, pop and pop format christian music here*i'll also throw in ,.that there is nothing wrong with vintage speakers,.as im of the beleif that new is not allways better
when i say large,..I mean in old tannoy,JBL large (physical size)
so...have fun guys and it will make for intersting reading and consideration.

From my experience Altec Model 19s are nice. The Gillum G3s are nice for a smaller nearfield if you can find them. Klipsch Belles and LaScallas aren't bad either. The Electro Voice Sentry IVB aren't shabby for a big room. Of course none of these are made anymore! I don't like constant directivity horns. There is no such thing. I like the sound of plane wave, concentric. hypex and tractrix horn progressions. But then that is my musical tastes. Ray Hughes

This is a very close resemblence to the design of our studio. Of course the room was designed to reject any standing waves. We use Altec Gauss custom monitors utilizing 2 15's and a horn in each cabinet.Keep in mind that you must tune your monitors flat with an RTA and good EQ's. It can be a long process but the end product is well worth it. When tuning your mains, make sure that there are no weak links in the chain from your desk to the mains. If it requires beefing up the desk... do it! EQ's... do it! We use 2 Urei 31 band eq's and they have been modified
However, We mostly depend on our nearfields more than our mains as of late.
Prior to the shift from mains to nearfields, I used the mains for getting the drums and bass happening and then shifted to my nearfields for everything else.
As far as what to buy. I'm a die hard JBL fan and alway will be after learning their sound and how to mix on them. I have heard alot of complaints about UREI 813's. Tannoy is a good choice.
Hi DanThanks for this info,.as man,.there are so many good choices out there
I too made the transition with JBL ,from the broadcast production enviroment,to the music recording enviroment
I found their earlier 80's and 90's monitors very consistent from the smallest to the largest in the series,In fact the little 4301 in its various forms was a favorite in alot of production houses ive worked .
But something has happened to the sound in their most recent boxes
i find,.kind of a lack luster kind of sound, compared to the earlier
offerings,.which had much more body or so it seems.
Im keeping room for something big,..like a Tannoy system 15 as an example.
Man..makes me wish i had not sold my faithful 82 klipsch Cornwalls
now theres a speaker that makes a Stienway sound like a Stienway.
Anyways,.thanx for your input,.and more to come from people i hope.
Its interesing that Urei is one system i have never worked with.rob
