The 624's are reference monitors. They are not supposed to sound good for hi fi. Rather, they are supposed to be accurace. That they are, except in the low end. Even mackie recommends using a sub. The spec says they go down to 40 or something like that, and no doubt they do, but that means nothing.Monitors results in good mixes, but not in great listening. There's a lot of material in this forum on that subject.
Also, they are near field monitors, so if you don't intend to listen to them within 3 feet, they will be neither accurate nor musical. Even the reviews of the 624's state that badly mixed music sounds bad on the 624's (which is supposed to happen). For that money, I think you can do better. The good news is that when the amp is inside the speaker, the designer has a lot of options available to acheive their objectives they would not have if they just have a speaker to work with.
