I guess you know this but...You might be getting hi fidelity hiss from MP3's. They are a lot more hissy than most people imagine. Try a real wav file to check the difference. A lot of napster stuff was recorded badly too - so you won't get good gain from it.
If all else fails try the Lynx hardware. I use it for the stereo I/O in my studio and the quality is fab.... and it supports pro trim standard in case you need more gain yet. Even at -10db trim I have more than enough to drive two sets of power amp inputs over 30 feet of low impedance balanced lines. Its expensive... but you get what you pay for.

Yeah. Expensive is a problem. $200 was a stretch. But, you wrongly assume that I'm using it for Mp3's! :) I have a scratch disk with mostly PCM on it. I do have some MP3's in the playlist, though. But, I know it's not that. M-Audio emailed me that I should get a better USB connection. I'm trying that. But, I had the same problem with the INTERNAL card. So, who knows..
