  I am using some Alesis M1 Actives with an older Parasound preamp/tuner. No problems or complaints so far - I bought some rca to 1/4" phone jack adapters at Radio Shack to make the connection.

  I'm not sure I have completely understood your question. Are you trying to output to both the active monitors and to a separate power amp? If so, you would need a preamp with multiple outputs (my Parasound has two). You could even run the active monitors off of a tape output, as long as you don't mind adjusting the volume at the monitor.

    i was just confused whether i could actually use a preamp with the monitors, but as long as its RCA to phono i'll pretty much be fine...

    no problems with impedance?
