  Use a mic to record, a pickup for sound reinforcement. In both cases don't go cheap but don't waste money either- buy from the middle of the pack price wise. If you're afraid of screwing up a pickup installation spend the fifty bucks to have a pro do it.

    Good all round condenser mic (battery or phantom powered): AKG C1000
    Best sounding saddle pickup tried thus far: B-Band Core 99.
