For personal enjoyment only - i play the guitar and wondered what would i could do to hook it into a mixer etc giving most bang for not much dollars. I am told that Fishman pickups are the way to go as far as pickups, but that would be expensive and invasive.Should i simply put a mike on to it and what sort?
appreciate any help..

I know you don't want to spend big bucks but here is some info just so you know, maybe for the future. I recently recorded a new classic guitar CD (Pure Magic) and ordered a couple dozen different mikes from Sweetwater Sound to test out. After recording many A-B tests, I settled on the Neumann TLM 170s. They were very clear but WARM sounding. A lot of mikes simply put too much edge or brightness on the sound for the classic guitar. I even use one for live concerts. I later found out that Christopher Parkening uses this mike on his newer recordings. Check out the sound clips from my web site if you like (though it's pretty lo-fi). Although some guitarists swear by them, I don't think a pickup comes anywhere close to even an average mic.

"For personal enjoyment only" and "most bang for not much dollars"With these two statements, I would suggest a Shure SM57 microphone and have a blast.

Both Beyer and Sennheiser make some great instrument condenser mics that clip on near the sound hole, but they are nortorious for generating strange sounds. Get a cardiod one NOT AN OMNI! Like SSL said these are for PA not recording. Any good large diaphragm condenser and some good ribbons are premo for recording. My favorite FOR MID FREQ PLUCKED STRINGS is a Sony C48. But a Royer is also fantastic. The best! James

The big question is are you recording or amplifying?Recording, the only way to go is mic. Live however, you often have to settle for a pickup begause of the acoustic gain issues...
Pickups -be they piezo/ceramic (including contact pickups) or magnetic always sound significantly worse. No solo acoustic guitarist EVER records a solo guitar project using a pickup.
I think that about sums it up for me!
Microphone wise, how much is your budget, and what type of equipment are you going to plug it in to? -No point getting a phantom-powered condensor if you don't have a preamp that can drive it with phantom power...
A Bridge pickup would be my choice.Gets the full body of the sound.
Use a mic to record, a pickup for sound reinforcement. In both cases don't go cheap but don't waste money either- buy from the middle of the pack price wise. If you're afraid of screwing up a pickup installation spend the fifty bucks to have a pro do it.

Good all round condenser mic (battery or phantom powered): AKG C1000
Best sounding saddle pickup tried thus far: B-Band Core 99.
