I am thinking of buying a system for personal use at home. And am thinking if it is a good idea to buy pro speakers. Is it overkill? Will it sound good when listening to it 20 feet away? I have a dedicated music room of 22ft x 30ft. I am looking at the following products. PLs. advise if i am in the right direction. I find pro equipment a lot cheaper than Home audio stuff for the same Watts/Power:
1 pair 18" Sub
1 pair 12" Full Range Horn
2 units Crown XLS-602
1 unit Home Pre-Amp

Follow Ups:
two 18" in that space IS overkill! If you do it, be sure your house insurance includes foundation repair, and all your glass windows are in well, the vibrations can un-do a lot.

Pro gear is the only way to go as far as I am concerned....I have had plenty of it....but only wished I had the drivers in furniture......
The older pro stuff...had duplicates for home use....JBL... Altec...EV...Bozak.......I have just now put TAD into home furniture.......WOW.......Really big stuff......I really like the EV stuff.....the pro stuff.......MTH -1.... TD 500.....I'm thinking of putting the EV drivers in furniture.....must have the look also.... but just an idea.....I always go with the pro stuff........youi never know when you really want to kick some ass....and still have a working system in the morning...hahahahahaah......... email me I will send pix...... You should check the Servodrive website. I am checking out some of their stuff later this week. The contractor cube is looking like a great playback setup.
I just finished a set of 4Pi Professional loudspeakers. This model is equipped with a JBL 2226H 15" bass driver and Eminence PSD2002 loaded horn top end in a very small package (26"x18"x15"). All "pro gear". I'm very happy with the result of this mix. Even though this combination results in a "high" f3 of 50 Hz, there is no lack of controlled POWERFUL bass and crystal clear highs. Pictures and windows will rattle and resonate at 85Db. I could go on and on....anyway...yes pro drivers work very well in a home setting .....just watch the volume! This speaker is 97 Db efficient and can take 600 watts all day. Take it easy or you WILL be deaf!

I like it dynamic, large impact, think of an excellent sounding dance club. Many high efficiency speakers mean low distortion for effortless sound at just about any level.I run
2 ev hp940s with ev dh1a compression drivers
4 jbl m151-8s each in own extra sand filled walls enclosure
4 eminance 18s, 6th order alignment in push pull slot loaded
dvd player to active crossover (used as volume control) to
Sumo model 9 to tweets
Ab international 600a to mids
Ab international 900a or 600 or altec 9440a to 18s.
Be sure to get yourself a hearing test often, or you may lose a lot of threshold perception, and not know it. Long term exposure to DB levels like this are contraindicated.

Funny, I work for an high-end audiophile company and the owner and head engineer worked on a pro gear project with me. A buddy of his has worked at EV for 20 some years and picked out the best that EV ever made, put together with a digital EQ from EV and HOLY S**T, it sounds outstanding. I have heard 5K, 10K, 20K "audiophile" loudspeakers that were a joke compared to these. So, my recommendations would be the older EV stuff (HR 90s/9040s) or older Altec (Voice of the Theater). This stuff is beyond most gear of today. I am actually starting another project this Fall... Oh, yeah, beware the power, I can hit 120dB in my living room...This is my setup:

Eh? what's that you say, what time is it? you'll have to speak up, so I can hear you!

if the uninformed insist on using things for purposes they weren't intended for so be it. I'm sure that there are those who are also not content with driving a mere Chevy Yukon and instead use a Caterpillar D9 to drive back and forth to the grocery store.

2 ev hp940s with ev dh1a compression drivers....how do you like these? I heard the t252 a few years back and I thought the highs were really nice. That was outside however....
4 jbl m151-8s each in own extra sand filled walls enclosure
4 eminance 18s, 6th order alignment in push pull slot loaded...sounds like a serious setup. How big is your room?
dvd player to active crossover (used as volume control) to
Sumo model 9 to tweets
Ab international 600a to mids
Ab international 900a or 600 or altec 9440a to 18s.....are these amps pro amps? how loud do you listen to this (124dB range?)
x
I love the horns, I use the cd horn re-eq from the active crossover for much flatter highs out closer to 20k.I like the cd horns because the tweeter level is just as flat far field (back of room) as near field. I am not used to hearing highs this clean in the back of the room. I love the tweets but do not have much experience comparing them to others. They remind me of the clarity and speed of a electrostat panel but can play louder then I need them to without straining the amplifier. Compression drivers need frequency compensation, and steep crossovers. Guys run 15s crossed at 500hz to tweets at 6db octave. That's a fast way to burn them and too much low frequencies modulating highs.
My room is 24 long by 13.5 wide by 8 high, Brick enclosed on 3 walls on a slab basement and 10" of foam stopping side reflections but only 2" on back wall.
Yes ab international are pro amps (they have a web site). The 900a's are thx certified and have switching rails. The 600a and 900a look like the leach schematics popular and sound good for the money. They aren't crown, crest, qsc or peavy, but the design is good.
How loud ???? Well tweets are 110db with 1 watt, they have 30 watts, mids are 108db 1 watt 4ohm, they have 300 watts, and subs are 2 boxes of a pair of 18s for a (102db) load of 4ohms per box, they have 400 watts rms. So loud and clean, I've never measured how loud as if I want it loud I have to leave the room or my ears ring especially strong at night when my head hits the pillow.

Myself, that is the direction I would go in. Be careful though, as you could go very wrong fast.--first, what type of spl are you after? Then:
what is your budget, and would you consider buying used? There are ways of finding good pro gear.
do your research, and possibly rent the gear you really are interested in , so you will *know* if you like it.
what kind of music do you like also plays a role as well as the type of sound you like. Audiophile most likely don't like alot of pro gear, but that is a different story.
What is the output Voltage on your preamp?
Your room is a good size, but you have to stay with a 60x40 or 90x40 horn. 40x20 would not be the best idea.
once the above are all determined, I am sure a few here will give recommendations.
Ebay always has pro gear used, as well as soundbroker.
You might want to check out what ServoDrive offers.

You are not listing the drivers you are looking at. Just like the home speakers just because it is "PRO" or High End doesn't mean much. Just make sure you look at the specsheets for distortion levels efficiency ect. Also depends on the levels you want. Most Pro stuff is high efficiency compared to home so it doesn't take much power to run them. . If the 12 full ranges are PA type speakers you may not like them in your home. Try them out first or make sure you can return them. Take a look at the PI Kits. Lots of happy people over there.http://www.audioasylum.com/forums/pi/bbs.html
I use all JBL Pro drivers in home builts I made and love the way they sound you may not. Its not for everyone.

I dont know if any of you guys are familiar with Wharfedale Pro Speakers. I am considering this set for strictly playback at home:Peavey PV1500 Amp running Wharfedale EVP-S12 12" Full Range
Peavey PV2600 Amp running Wharfedale EVP-S18 18" Subwoofer
Peavey RQ-200 Mixer
DOD SR231Q Equalizer
