A friend plays guitar but has no amp,can I run him into the mixing board direct or do I need a DI box, also do I plug him into a regular line in channel or the line in on a mic channel with the gain control.
Thanks for any help you can offer

How far away is the mixing console? You can run into all sorts of problems with long 1/4" cable runs.
Btw, you can certainly DI a guitar and get very decent results...it all depends on the sound you're after and what kind of pickup you've got on the guitar, etc...In fact, there have been times where the DI sounds better than mic'ing the amp (blasphemy I know).
All I can say is give it a try and if you like the results, then don't worry about the image of what is "proper"...it's music, be creative, but don't settle for less either.
Btw, how does your guitar playing friend practice if he doesn't have an amp? I can understand if its just acoustic, but you mentioned he's using a distortion pedal...
he has one of them little cheap fender 1 watter, the board is within 20 feet I was hoping to put his guitar/pedal through the board direct/di'id for now if that would work, the setup i use has plenty of power so thats not a problem. if not i'll have to pitch in for either a Vamp or a small amp for him. I just didnt want to do it direct without knowing more just in case their was a risk of damaging something.
Thanks

Can the dude afford 50.00 plus shipping?
Pick up a little amp like this and run his guitar into it
and put a mic on it and into your sound system
The answer to your question is no you dont have to have a D.I.
but the signal will be very weak and very clean
Have the guy pick up a little amp and mic it up
how about the rack mount vamps are they any good, the reason being itll be a part of my rack and i could plug in any guitarists who decide to drop in without the need for them to bring there amps, space is a serious concern for me

Sure that would work
I found one for 99.00
Everywhere else its 170.00
Possible but it will sound c**p.
While bass is fine di'd a guitar is only half an instrument without an amp.
So he needs an amp then, I was hoping on getting away with him by plugging his guitar into his distortion pedal then the mixer. I know this is going to cost me as he has no money only talent(A true Rocker eh!)oops sorry I let the accent slip there!

You can try multi effects box (like the Korg Pandora) between the guitar and the board. They are relatively cheap. Otherwise, your range of tones maybe somewhat limited with just one pedal.
