They're talking Bose, and though I'm not the Bosehater some are, I just don't think their stuff is dollar-wise. I'd like to be able to show the gym guys a semi-turnkey system that will bump their aerobics room.
Room is about 400 sq. ft. and slightly 'L' shaped (about 26' × 22', with one corner missing. Drywall with suspended ceiling, plenty of space above the ceiling tiles if needed. Base will need to be compact, handle CD at minimum, mp3/ipod would probably be nice too. Four speakers would definitely cover the area, two m-maybe could (it's a very fat 'L'). They're talking sub for bump factor, which I don't think that little Bose will have much of. Budget is ~$2K.
Any ideas? Linkies? Names?

For a room that size you don't need a huge system. But if you really want to have the room bumping go with a good set of 10" main speakers such as Gemini's or Behringers. The Gemini's are cheaper but I can't imagine you would ever really need to turn it up so loud in there that they would be a problem. The Behringer's will definitely give you better sound but will be a little more upfront cost.
Rent something first, like a pair of 15" powered cabinets, and a powered sub. Try them with and without the sub. On the other hand, a powered mixer and passive speakers might be a better choice, if the instructor will be using a mic as well as a music source. It'll also be simpler to just run speaker cables to each cabinet.
400 SF? That's about the size of a large living room. Heck, my living room/dining room open area is 450 SF, and it ain't "big".
I assume that the floor is wood, vinyl, or some other hard surface.
How high is the ceiling? I'll take a guess at 10 ft.
That being said... I don't think your problem is so much about specific products as it is about strategy.
You said Bose, but you didn't say if it was the wave radio with the CD player and cheap remotes. That puppy can fill your room with sound - not good sound, but what hottie at aerobics class is listening for crisp highs anyway? (Probably couldn't hear the highs anyway, with all the heavy breathing and foot noise going on.)
But seriously... you must not have a stereo at home. 'Cause if you did, you wouldn't be asking this question. So here's my professional advice: Go to a store which sells stereo/hi-fi stuff, and check out the cool gear. Get a nice boom box, and use the audio outputs to hook up a pair of good 8-inch 2-ways (KRK, M-Audio, Mackie, etc.), then crank the bass. $1,400 tops, including cables and tax.
Use the other six hundred to buy drinks for the chicks later. Who knows, you might get a date. :)
You want to go with powered loudspeakers
I could say JBL or Mackie would work also
I have heard the B52 stuff and it would work fine for your application
Here is my recomendations
For ease of setup
Go with these/they are all self powered and easy to setup

You can get a small little budget mixer that you could hook your
audio stuff into and also have a microphone or wireless mic for
the instructor
Behringer Xenyx 1002/This unit is dependable and has very clean op amps

This system is way under budget and I guarantee it will give you
all you want for that size room and the bass you want also
You can run your Mp3 players Ipods/microphone/computer etc
all through that behringer mixer
Actually I didn't, at least intentionally. What I was thinking of was a head/source/mixer/power amp unit, with wires running out to the speakers, wherever they would be. This way, there wouldn't have to be AC to the speakers. Because of the large overceiling space, wire installation would not be a problem, and would not require a lot of installer tools. I was thinking of mounting the speakers on wall/ceiling brackets up by the suspended to keep them out of the way. Due to ignorance, I'm actually very open about the overall configuration of the system, except that I expect management to be concerned about size of the head/etc. unit.
Mahalo for your advice,
Poinz
