Here's another option: the Avid/Digidesign MBox 2 Pro goes for about $600, but includes ProTools LE, so it busts your budget but you get something extra. I've been nicely surprised with the sound quality. On the digital side it supports up to 24-bit/96 kHz. Inputs are: 2 mic, 2 DI, 2 line, 2 phono (haven't tried those). Outs are: 4 line, 2 monitor, 2 headphone. Also has S/PDIF and wordclock in & out, and 2 firewire ports. Line and monitor outs support either balanced or unbalanced via 1/4" phone plugs (TRS or TS). The DAC sounds about on par to the DACs built into the HHB CDR830 or Marantz SA-8260.
Anyone in NYC who has a Duet and wants to compare it to the MBox, lemme know - it might be interesting.

There is NO substitute for the live performance.
If you google "scott endler", you should find his page where he talks about modding the Behringer units. Prices are a tad more than your parameter.
I have no personal experience, simply than doing my desk research on the web ( and an emailed question to scott which he answered) for essentially a DAC around that price you are looking at.
Really good sound for music playback. Also a great little recording interface, especially if you have a Mac.
I play uncompressed music files on my MacBook Pro, through the Duet into a pair of Adam-A7 monitors.
Beats audiophile DACs costing way more.
that the Duet only is supported on Apple systems - not on Windows-based PCs or Linux/Unix. This is a real bummer, IMHO, as I would suspect there is a good market for this little DAC among PC users.
Cheers,
David
looks like an impressive unit. how would you hook it up to a home hi fi w rca jacks?
The cable that comes with the Duet accepts male TS. You can use your RCA interconnects with an adaptor from Radio Shack or replace the RCAs on the source end of your interconnect with TS males.
? "TS" ?
Tip Sleeve--single-ended connection via 1/4" phono plug.
