In Reply to: RE: Are these guys nuts or on to something? Modded Crown D-45. posted by harecording on September 14, 2008 at 08:52:39
I'm looking for a simple good sounding SS amp to use with highish sensitivity speakers. I don't need a lot of power so 25-50 watts is fine.
I have read that the D-45 or D-75a sounds good, has a good "sound-stage" and is reliable.
It looks like there are enough of them out there that I can find one in great condition cheap. The cheapest I've seen it new is $375. One retailer has it online for $225 but it might be a misprint.
Is the mod done to the amp realistic or just putting lipstick on a pig?
Any other inexpensive "sleeper" pro amps to look at? Thanks!!!
Follow Ups:
This whole "sound stage" term is highly over used IMO.
No, that is no misprint. If you buy it from a contractor that sells to the military and avionics industry (they use them in flight simulators) then you will get a better deal than what Crown allows to be advertised.
Some other good sources are:
Northern Sound and Light
Pro Sound Productions, Dallas
Full Compass (these guys are whores and sell everything cheap, cheap)
Yeah, I put sound-stage in quotes for a reason :^)
So I guess what your telling me is that it might fit my needs.
Any opinion of copying the mods that Juicy Music does to it?
TIA!
It should faithfully recreate the mouse squeaking on your favorite Yoko Ono records.
