I would like some advice on 15" 2 or 3 way pro JBL speakers that have around 100db sensitivity for us with my SET amps. 8 or 16 ohm is what I am looking for. I currently use vintage Altec Carmels but I just love the sound my old Jbl's that are not efficient enough. I was thinking of the now discontinued vs3115's or maybe the newer cinema speakers 3678 I think. I would really appreciate any advice. thanks.

some of the JBL theater systems that seem to be showing up these days. These would be about 20 years old or so. I'm thinking of the JBL 4675 or one of the variants of these. Trot over to Lansing Heritage and look up the catalogs there or at www.jblpro.com. They made a number of versions all designed to sit behind the projection screen so cosmetics are at a miniumum.
I'm suspecting that a number of these are coming off long-term leases or have been fully depreciated and are being replaced. I recently picked up a set of these when a local theater was gutted and being rebuilt to its original glory. The only thing wrong with them, besides lots of dust, was that some workman had put a 2x4 through one of the woofers.
There are a number of folks who appear to like these not-small speakers, too. The attached link is a conversation on a similar topic. Note that the it includes the opinions of Andy Summers, among others. There's a picture of the speakers I picked up - without the hottie - there.
I paid $500 for the lot. Check eBay as I see them there occasionally.
Cheers,
David
Most of the good JBL stuff I've heard is pre-1960 and BIG. The acoustic lens tweeter made for Westrex. Also look at Klipsch, Altec, Electro Voice, Gillum. Klipsch Belles or even LaScallas would be nice. Ray Hughes
Hi, audiobag:
I cannot be certain about the actual sensitivity rathing for these, but you do not necessarily have to look at JBL professional speakers for your application.
I happen to own a nice pair of JBL L-65 "Jubal" speakers. These are three-way with a 12" woofer, prismatic "077" tweeter and a 5" midrange. I believe that mine were manufactured in the mid seventies and cost a bundle. These days, a pair of just the tweeters will bring over $400.
I had the foam surrounds professionally restored on the woofers a few years ago and these are unquestionably among the sweetest sounding JBL speakers I have ever heard, period.
I run them not with an SET amp, but a single Marantz 8-B tube amp, which I restored years ago.
Here is some information on the L-65:

Go read up on the L-65 Jubal and read what users have to say here or there. You will be quite pleased, provided that they are efficient enough for your amplifiers. Otherwise, get an 8-B and forget about anything else in audio reproduction as far as speakers go.

Some of the newer JBL self-powered speakers are very nice. Take a look at www.jblpro.com.
But there are also several other very nice brands you shouldn't ignor.
