i just purchased a jolida tube preamp w what i hear is a smoking phono stage. i'd like to dabble in lp's a little. my budget is around $150. i see lots of tables in this range. are these appropriate for decent quality home lp playing? will they tear up lp's? or shpould i suck it up and pay $300 for a rega or music hall? thanks

Spend a weekend or two garage saleing, and hit some thrift stores. You should come across some decent turntables for next to nothing. You'll probably need the $150 for a good cartridge or replacement stylus.
Although a bit over your budget, I had used a Technics SL1200 with a grado platinum cartg for awhile and the sound was excellent. You really don't need a fancy shmancy "audiophile" table to get decent sound.

Your budget would be close to the average for an old Luxman, probably have to bump up by $50 or so. Check out some of the old 270's, 272's, I'm sure there are a few audiophiles here who could comment on these great tables and some of the other cool models. OR, from experience, I have an old Kenwood KD 500, Direct Drive, bullet proof, exacting, sonic, had it for 20 years and serviced once. Solid and easy to use. If you HAVE to have a newer "DJ" table, I hear Vestax is very good.

Hi,
While more expensive, get thee a Technics SL 1200 Mk II or Mk V. These can be upgraded to audiophile spec. Will cost $400-$500 stock. Kevin A Bacon at KABUSA has mods for adding 78 RPM and improving performance on 1200s. The Numarks aren't as good for home use. The Luxman tables mentioned are very fine audiophile tables but aren't for DJ work.
