Some systems used a marker tag on the tape to initiate it.

Follow Ups:
some of the Sony models - its been toooo long since I worked on one - had the sensors in the tension arms. You'll need to get out your magnifying glass and examine the whole tape path for anything that looks like a place where there's a gap that might indicate that a piece of foil could 'trip' a sensor. Also, make sure that every point where the tape touches along the path is absolutely free of any buildup.I saw too many of those autoreverse R2Rs and cassette decks not work due to a glob (technical term, that) of oxide buildup on the sensor.
Of course, you can get a copy of the owner's manual and really know for sure.
Cheers,
Thankyou both for the responses. David, it appears that the foil is the key. I applied AC duct self-stick aluminum tape to an old tape and -viola! it works fine in both directions. Again, thanks, Wayne
