Remember those old Stereo Review reviews for phono cartridges? Some cartridges put out near-perfect 1 kHz square wave response. Had there been phase anomalies, they would manifest as gross distortions in the "shape" of the square wave plots. (And some cartridges did exhibit such anomalies.)
