Absolutely agree: Don't forget the underdog! There are bargains to be had...
I use an australian-made ARX MultiQ, nearly as good as Klark Teknik but (s/h) less then a quarter of the price.
There is only one brand I would never touch and thats Behringer!
Everything of theirs I have ever (tried to) use was either broken (if new) or just rubbish.
Especially their digital stuff seems to be populated by the worlds crappiest algorhythms and the cheapest convertors known to man.
I've never owned any Behringer myself, but a house system at a club where I occasionally ran sound had a 24ch Behringer console. It had the smoothest, most consistent DISTORTION I've ever heard! Actually, I lost respect for that brand well before then, when they were copying the Mackie look so closely that Mackie dragged them into court. (Mackie lost, but Behringer changed the cosmetics anyway.)
well at least your distortion was consistent...
Tried to buy a console of theirs once; the first one had a few channels not working,
the second whistled loudly every now and then (never found out why) and on the third
all faders and some pots crackled loudly when touched.
Luckily the shop gave me my money back. The shop manager told me Behringer has no quality control at all and that is one of the reasons they are so cheap which I tend to believe.
He was just surprised that my three had different faults and not the same one every time!
I got myself a s/h Soundcraft which is more reliable, sounds much better and cost less. Theres a lesson in there somewhere...
I'm partial to the British-designed live consoles myself, like Allen & Heath or Soundcraft; some of the best values for the price!
With my financial constraints being what they were, the choice I had was either a new Allen & Heath, a new Mackie or a ten year old Soundcraft Delta DLX.
Never regretted going for the Soundcraft, it does everything I want from it and it has the second best eq of any console I've used. The best was on an E-series SSL...
