Hello,
I am pondering building a Fostex FE208Sigma in a small sealed or vented enclosure to run from about 150Hz. on up. I was wondering if anyone can recommend a pro-sound woofer(?) that would work well up to 150Hz. I would like to use this with passive crossovers (6db), and a single SET amp (300B possibly). The woofer would have to have 96db eff. to mate well with the Fostex (I think). Thorsten, if you would use this type of set-up, would you use a cap on the Fostex to block out the low bass, or let it run without one? I want to stay out of the 300Hz to 8000Hz "sensitivity zone" with crossovers. I am thinking of building seperate boxes for the woofer & Fostex, and stacking the Fostex on top. Thanks for the suggestions.Later,
Doug
You could try an Eminence Kappa Pro 15". They sound better than you would think. (though I've only heard one in a big horn) Size of enclosure would be ~6 cu ft or ~4 cu ft if you use the "lf" model.-greg
Assuming my specs is typical, a vented design will rolloff at ~200Hz, assuming it's up against a wall. Otherwise it will need to either be EQ'd or XO'd higher. Sealed would be ~600Hz for a Qtc=0.5.To get an effective 1st order XO will require that the drivers be ~flat for three octaves on either side of the XO point, so you can't use a vented design.
But I guess this isn't what you wanted to hear, so assuming a vented design to keep the XO <300Hz, then cap it off where the rolloff begins, for an 18dB/octave slope to keep the driver from overexcursing below Fb. You will need multiple drivers if you want LF extension and 96.5dB (my specs) efficiency. If you're willing to accept rolled off bass below ~80Hz, then any non M.I. (musical instrument) <.55Qts driver with a ~flat BW for at least three octaves and ~96-97dB efficiency should work fine.
