Hello, everybody! This is the lost part of registry tweaks that are best performed during part 13-15, but you can do it anytime BEFORE part 17 and onwards.
1. Go HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\0001\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI\(Your soundcard name may be different)VEN_1621&DEV_0023&SUBSYS_00231621&REV_00\4&6A4EAF8&0&08F0
open this key and find there your sound card, delete DirectSound.
Perform this step in all sets.
2. Go HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SW and delete every key inside. You will find there our mortal friends.
Note, that the 7th key from above (sysaudio) or some other (the only one) won't let itself be deleted, so enter it and delete inside, Perform in all sets.
3. Go HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GroupOrderList and delete:
Antivirus, Encryption, Content Screener, Copy Protection, Physical Quota Management, Quota Management, Security Enhancer,
System Recovery, NetBios Group, Network, Spooler Group, Streams Drivers, Activity Monitor, Compression, Continuous Backup,
Replication, SCSI CDROM class, SCSI Miniport, Content Screener.
Repeat in all sets.
4. Almost in the same place:
Go HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ServiceGroupOrder
As You open this key, in the window to the right you will see only 2 lines. Doubleclick List,
The dialog that opens will show you almost the same services and groups as in GroupOrderList (see above). Almost the same, but there
is a slight difference. So, Delete:
Antivirus, Encryption, Copy Protection, Security Enhancer, Physical Quota Management, Quota Management, Content Screener, Streams Drivers,
NetBios Group, Spooler Group, Network Provider, Audio Group, SCSI Miniport, SCSI CDROM Class, Compression, Continuous Backup, Replication,
Activity Monitor, Event Log, Local Validation, Scheduler Group, Smart Card Group, Remote Validation.
Perform in all sets.
Serge.
P.S. I had written that tweaks part 15 would be very good, however, nobody confirmed. I think it is because I have forgotten about these registry tweaks in the havoc I had been in.
I AM sorry, folks.
P.P.S. Don't know if these are still relevant after nLite registry swapping.
Follow Ups:
I was able to do 2 thru 4 using Mihalov's method, having done all steppes and M's list before. I deleted all keys under SW without resistance though each deletion asked for permission. I don't use a soundcard so step 1 is irrelevant for me.
I had also attempted registry cleaning by using Advanced Registry Cleaner on a partition at an earlier step after applying later registry changes only. I then substitured the config files System and Software from this system into the fully savaged system. Then I did these final registry steps. I have not done the xplite thing, however.
Hello! Inmates! No permission was asked for or given. I made these changes during part 13-15 of the tweaks and AFTER the services and legacy services (around tweaks part7) were deleted from the registry. No permission was demanded. The xplite was implemented to its utmost after part 3, then minlogon (in my current setup I didn't need to make a minlogon acrobatics). When making standard cics' tweaks I DISABLED practically all the services, not just stopped them and disabled IP security from administrative tools-local security settings. This weekend I am going to rebuild everything from scratch (to use ps/2 mouse) and will go this way again but with Junaid's batch files. Will report, if anything goes differently. Also, a nontechnical comment: when you start from scratch, make all the cics changes + disable ip security and proceed with my tweaks. make xplite, awe, minlogon. THEN... LISTEN. If it sounds really good after my tweaks part 3-4, it WILL sound good. If it doesn't, you better start again. You may repeat the same steps, but the sonic result will be different. I can't explain why.
Serge.
I think you should try an nLite install(unless you already did and did not like what you got). Seems to me you would have to have a smaller config folder than you could get otherwise. Registry is built at installation. I have no idea how much registry modification is done within XPLite so my assumptions could be completely erroneous.
Had not looked at the Administrative Tools/Local Security Settings before. Looks like lots of things worth exploring there. I guess you could implement AWE from there ...
Don't know if you used AUTORUNS before but I found I could uncheck/delete everything corresponding to a file to be deleted and lots of stuff dealing with SERVICES dependent on SHELL32. This was done within cMP. More stuff eliminated from the registry. There was little left of AUTORUNS when I was finished. Only the entries dealing with stuff I knew was needed. My config folder is now 4.2 mB.
Also went through some of the registry deleting stuff dealing with the services not needed and whose .dll files are deleted anyway. Also, deleted from DEFAULT all file suffixes dealing with audio and video. Got a list from WIKIPEDIA of all file extensions to go by.
Files that were needed (for the machine to start) from an earlier big nLite install (only keyboard and languages unchecked) were not there to begin with with the minimal nLite install leading to a smaller WINDOWS.
Now I want to do it again with this new idea about Administrative Tools/Local Security Settings and hear what happens.
Hi, Rick! I want to make a superminimal nlite install, but I don't know if it will allow Lynx drivers installation, if it will remove all the files and so on. I will use batch files, reg files, but how to clean windows to the extent I am at now,I don't yet know.
Also, how do we do nlite? make a disk and install xp from it? What next?
About the size of the registry. Did diminishing it work positively for you? As far as I understood ALL registry all 16mb(from the start) is always read and is residing in the nonpaged memory, and this is the most precious part of physical memory, that our soundcards' drivers use and, I think, partly cplay/cmp. I tried reducing "visible" memory for windows with /maxmem=*** setting. Interesting that reducing memory timings demands for slightly more like 215-216-217 mb. to ramload in cmp. I am yet to test /burnmemory instead of /maxmemory. The latter setting allows to avoid "holes" in nonpaged memory, that some people report. Anyway, will soon post about the results, including anothes STABLE boot.ini setting. Very good results.
Serge.
Please, for those like me, can you, if enough time, post a more extended NLITEing process? With traps to avoid. What is the size of windows after nlite instal. How functional it remains. What is this talk about registry cleaning?
It is free and simple. And the install goes so quickly finding something that doesn't work is no big deal. About ten minutes start to finish.
You will have to have NETFRAMEWORK on the machine you use to produce the install disk.
There is a place where you can tell it to delete or retain specified files.
I had success deleting the codecs but when I tried to make a big deletion list something or other would go wrong so after goint through eleven disks I gave up. I will try this again but that day it was all I could stand!
If Junaid's registry cleaner works this becomes a moot point anyway
Go download it and play with it. http://www.nliteos.com/
I have made ten's of disks over the last three months to find how little I could get away with.
The minimal recommendation I gave works with JULI@ and PS/2.
If you know which files the LYNX needs just make sure you retain them in the spot where this is allowed (ADVANCED tab) I don't have it in front of me so forgive my minimal help!
You can also load drivers into the install. Though I must add I tried to load JULI@ drivers and this did not work for me. I probably did something wrong.
It is very simple to use just take you time looking at it the first time.
I look forward to hearing what tricks you come up with!
I am planning on making a list of what I did but as soon as I think I have it ready (in my head) you and Junaid come up with bew ideas to incorporate.
As I mentioned before the registry cleaner fclo recommended would not work with my nLite install. I will try Junaid's recommended one when I do the next install which just might be tonight! Can't wait to power that PS/2 mouse with my 5 volts sdd/hdd power supply. Why did that not occur to me?
I could not get this to delete using Junaid's method (music computer SSD oconnected to my regular computer) so I got excited about the MIHAYLOV method which simply did not work.
Desparation ensues.
I noticed the PREMISSION choice and see that permission must be asked for before you delete these files. With each one you must ask and as soon as that is done deletion occurs without complaint.
Now to see if it will work ....
Your ask for '...permission...allow...' worked like a charm for me. I was able to get Steppe's registry, step 2 completed now. Thanks Rick you are right: its a big big impact on transparency.
~could not get this to delete using Junaid's method (music computer SSD oconnected to my regular computer~
The batch files have to be run on the Music computer itself. If they were to be run on a different computer, by connecting the SSD like u tried to do, then u need to edit my Batch files & change the Drive letter of the Root drive to the one which ur host computer has now assigned...
By default, the batch files have the Root Drive letter as C:\
If u connect this SSD to another computer, then it will assign a seperate drive letter to it, (eg K:\)
Then edit the batch file & all u have to do is Use the "Replace All" switch & replace the C:\ with the Drive letter now assigned...
Junaid
I am not aware you had done a batch file for these latest registry mods.
No batch files can be run on my music computer at this point. I had to connect to the other machine, using the LOAD HIVE method.
Would not allow deletion until I right clicked on the entry to be deleted and click PERMISSIONS. Check ALLOW and all was easily done.
Maybe it is because I am making the changes from another computer loading the hive from the MUSIC SSD.
Asking PERMISSION is not a big deal - just right click your mouse and check ALLOW. Simple, but I had to find it by looking at everything since I do not know anything about computers other than what I have learned from cMP. I certainly did not mean to imply this was difficult or scary.
I can say having been "forced" to save this for last the change it made was dramatic. One of the most dramtic changes I have experienced with the process. Not subtle in the least.
My curiousity got to me and I wondered what would happen if one removed SAM and/or security from the config file. Well, the answer is you get to re-do the STEPPE BIOS optimization. No need for anyone else to try this.
or the subfolders below the main entries?
I just deleted the subfolders.
Should I go back and get the other stuff?
.
me too

Sorry, but in what step of 4? If it is step 2 I can't help much, because the comp I am now at, doesn't have a soundcard inside enabled and no drivers installed, there is only asyncmac under sw now on my "virgin" internet/working comp, my cmp hdd is already cleaned. But IIRC there should be entries inside for aec, splitter wdmaud, sysaudio... directsound and so on. DETETE everything INSIDE sw, concerning sound. I mean that when you click on sw it will open and display entries like {eeab7790-c514-11d1-b42b-00805fc1270e} in this examole it is asyncmac, but you should have other entries also like the above example numbers. They can be all deleted, exept sysaudio entry. You should get INSIDE sysaudio entry and also delete inside. Hope this is not too confusing. But I think that there is everything about sound, including asyncmac, but be carefull. I cannot say it from memory. Too much time has passed and too many changes.

Serge,
I wish I knew computer-speak better. You would probably understand what I was asking if I knew how to ask it!
Under SW, when you first open it there are the basic entries with + signs which when clicked give us the entries with the audio stuff.
I deleted only those entries, the ones that appear after the + is clicked and wondered if I should delete what is left after deleting the items shown when the + is clicked.
I bet if you did the PERMISSIONS thing you could have deleted sysaudio just like you did the others.
It is funny how different each of our installs can behave!
I am assuming I should go back and delete the items with the + sign next to them, also. Of course, now they won't have a + sign next to them ....
Btw even though I could not complete step 2 the sonic impact of these Reg tweaks had a significant clarity, purity, 'improved timbre' effect on my system.
A big thank you.
Serge I could not delete any of the keys in step 2...not just the 7th key down. Anyway you say go inside the keys and delete that way. Can you say a little more about this? How do you exactly do it?
first one made "no sense" in my registry.
Don't know what I was thinking.
On #2, even connected to my other computer (of ocurse, the only way I could make the changes) there was no way to delete the stuff - neither left column or the right.
Any way to trick the machine into letting me do these deletions?
Did you get a sq pop for 4 assuming you could not do 1,2 or 3?
