With respect to config....I confused config folder within system32 with config.sys which is a file within windows root. Ok I have that clarified now. But I agree with Rick I believe it was Steppe #22 that said to delete all folders within Windows to leave only system, system32 and fonts. Hence Registration was deleted and it works fine for me but Mihaylov says its needed because ... drivers ASIO of Juli are not defined in cPlay without the file R000000000007.clb (which is in Registration).
We may be at the end of the deletion party and I am convinced of the small variations of XP that seem to be the cause of these inconsistencies of what can/cannot be eliminated.
I am convinced of the small variations of XP that seem to be the cause of these inconsistencies
Different XP releases, SP levels, mobo drivers, BIOS firmware, soundcard drivers, configurations (e.g. headless v KVM). On my two Atom mobos, many settings that work fine on one do not work at all on the other.
For example, my Fit-PC does not boot if /nopae is present in boot.ini or /fastdetect is set to always off. There are ten or more LAN-related devices I can turn off in DevMgr on my Intel mobo that I cannot turn off on my Fit-PC although the two boards use the same LAN driver .
I suspect it also depends on how many devices one has disabled in DevMgr (cics' list being by no means exhaustive). For example, he rapped me across the knuckles for advocating switching off DMA but I am convinced my systems sound better for it. They're certainly no worse - my guess is that the chipset drivers handle DMA and that the disabled XP device is a default.
In short, the various sets of instructions, batch files and the like are a welcome guide - many thanks to the various authors - but they are not a panacea. They get one most of the way there and there's nothing wrong with that. The rest of it is subject to test with way too many variables for a prescription.
which can be removed:AUTOEXEC.BAT
CONFIG.SYS
IO.SYS
MSDOS.SYS
(thanks to Dave)
R000000000001.clbIf to convert file system of the disk C from NTFS into FAT32 (by means of Acronis) that folder System Volume Information can be removed without restoration at system reboot. (In this case ntfs.sys in the folder Drivers it will be necessary to replace with fastfat.sys).
- How to remove folders СatRoot and CatRoot2 that they were not rebuilt after system reboot?
- How to reduce the registry size?

The file pciidex.sys needs to be removed only from the folder system32.

Rick you said:
'....I tried deleting pcidex.sys with no success.
Forgot, too, that without setup.api JULI@ drivers do not load.
Meant to say vga.sys on my previous post; haven't tried yet to remove...'
Yea I tried pcidex with no luck also. Yes you need setupapi and vga.sys
You deleted the whole config folder? I'm at 47 mb if I delete my config folder which is 16mb I'll be at 31 mb??
Could you use different sample rates when you deleted config?
no way you would every start with that done!
I hope I said I deleted the SXS folder so all of those deletes with the long names will be long gone (no need to delete when they're gone).
You cannot play with cPLAY if you delete the .log and whatever the other one's name is within config. You have to leave the main ones. There is that one section in DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS, too.
I wonder if all of those most be returned. Maybe only SOFTWARE. I will try tomorrow and see how far one must go.
the registry .log and .sav files are deleted.
I was playing around with the two up-samplers; had been trying SOX and had tried to return to SRC and something went wrong: like and on and off sound and impossible to get out. Had to restart; even required resetting BIOS. All was fine after that but I guess to use another one these files must be returned.
I found that one cannot delete WINSPPOL.EXE - the rest were alredy deleted and with the exception of the problem described - no other problems.
I have deleted SXS entirely - a few weeks ago with no ill effects.
Deleted the folders RYELANDS mentioned. All went fine.
Wonder how many of the empty DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS folders can be deleted? Most of them are empty. Will try later this week.
I tried deleting pcidex.sys with no success.
Forgot, too, that without setup.api JULI@ drivers do not load.
Meant to say vga.sys on my previous post; haven't tried yet to remove.
Current WINDOWS size: 41.7 mB with the registry files deleted.
- I checked. The files *.log and *sav removed from the folder config do not influence the settings of cPlay - all works fine.
- The remained content of the folder WinSxS is necessary for remote access to cMP2.
- The drivers ASIO of Juli are not defined in cPlay without the file R000000000007.clb therefore do not delete this file!
Rick, what size of the folder config in your OS?
Serge.

Strange. I have deleted all Registration entries without having issues with cPlay or cMp..
After steppe 22, the sound is Awesome. I don't feel I need to go ahead with anything else. Feels like cMp optimisations are finally complete. The Most critical files influencing the sound along this delete route seemed to be the ones in the Win_SxS folder. Technically the contents of this folder may not have anything to do with the Audio section of a computer, but in Practice, it did...
If one is experiencing a forward or thin sound, it's advisable to experiment with what goes into or out of Win_SxS..
Junaid
And if so, can you still go back and forth between the upsamplers?
I am not sure if you use them at all.
I had not deleted the REGISTRATION file, which does not contain the file that has been mentioned as necessary for cMP, I do not think my machine ever continued the file ending with "7".
I have not tried going back to my last image and seeing if I can change the up-sampler. I do think I had made the change (from SRC to SOX) after that image had been made.
Just curious ...
Junaid, are you ready to remove components from your MB?
but I very well may have.
Thanks for the correction. I will try restoring that first. Tomorrow.
Don't have access to the drive but I believe I remember correctly that without the superfluous registry files I was at 41.7 nB. No more than that.
I figured you had your reasons for retaining SXS due to your network stuff.
Though I thought the other Serge had said you recommended deleting it entirely. I do not remember you saying this directly. I tried it and have had no problems. It is staying out.
I guess your network arrangement allows you to delete WINSPOOL.EXE. My machine would not allow it!.
I do think I am down to the minimum. Other that deleting empty folders and some kind of massive registry deletion (!!!) I think I am as low as I can go.
Does seem there is lots of registry that could be deleted. Much tricker than files deletion.
Wish I could use AUTORUNS. Don't feel like re-installing all of those necessary folders.
That is the only conclusion I can think of too (i.e., different xp systems). Not a problem though I always have my prior snapshot level to go back to.
But no problem I can always go back to a prior snapshot level

Many thanks for that. Not that it matters in the scheme of things but IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, Config.SYS and Autoexec.bat can safely be deleted from C:\.
Thank you. I'll try.

Tried these deletions ...mostly config stuff plus pcidex...and it wouldn't boot. I restored all the files and it still would not boot. Back to a prior level via Snapshot.

Theo, I do not know what to say. It is strange. I have the feeling that we have different OS :).
