I went ahead before this to try on my own preserving networking and did fairly well but did delete some on this list and associated registry keys. How do you put them back. I have another install of cMP pre steps 5-7, so can I copy keys from them...and how, if so?
Follow Ups:
Using .reg file that can be done using a template for minlogon (file name and registry keys must be of course different):
Using Notepad, create a file called minlogon.reg containing the following text:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"Config"=dword:00000017
Double-click on minlogon.reg to make the requisite Registry change.

Thanks so much, Mihaylov. I found on my own the way wlowes recommends. theob, I put the .reg exported files on the cMP desktop and double-clicked them in explorer. Doing so from the thumb drive would also probably work as well.
Mihaylov, I restored everything as best I could to what you said should stay. When I try to use the net use command I am told the workstation service is not started. When I give the net start workstation command I get "Workstation service terminated with service-specific error 2250". I have googled for solutions but find none that work. One message at microsoft said to use the net config workstation commmand to see what's what but this just says workstation is not started. I will review what I did to see if I missed something (once again), but meanwhile do you know what might be missing or wrong?
I put a bunch back by going to another XP machine,
open regedit
go and hilite the key you want
file-> export to a filename on a jump drive
then move drive to the cmp machine
each reg file you double click will restore the key you saved. prevents typos
This is an excellent solution...just some clarification. You said:
'...go and hilite the key you want...'
ok clear to me
'...file-> export to a filename on a jump drive...'
I assume the 'file-> export' command is available from regedit. Correct? Is filename pre-existing? By jump drive do you mean thumb drive?
'...then move drive to the cmp machine
each reg file you double click will restore the key you saved. prevents typos...'
So while still on thumb drive double click?
Thanks again
Basically yes to all. To export, in regedit it is File-export.
It will export everything below the spot you have highlighted. It will prompt you for the file name. you need to get that file to the target machine. Again in regedit File-Import. it will ask for the file name. You will be prompted for "do you really want to update the registry?'
click yes and it is done.
I restored all the Steppe 7 registry changes using this approach as I tried to debug my shutdown problem. Take a back up of the registry before starting for safety. I believe you get the whole thing by highlighting the very first entry.
thanks
The good way!
Serge.
