This may be a bit long, forgive me ahead of time...
Anyway, been at home resting this week due to an unfortunate event that happened last Friday, so been listening to a lot of music throughout the days. The Cosecant has really come to life and brought back the enjoyment of digital music that was lacking before.
Me being the vinyl fan, I really love the Musical Involvement, the full bodied sound, and the musicality of vinyl playback. I strongly preferred it to the digital playback I had before. Where the vinyl was smooth, and warm, and musical, the digital was hard and clean but bright and perhaps too detailed. That might be great if I listen for numbers, but I listen for the music. I do not own a single recording because it sounds good, or is audiophile showoff approved. I buy music I like, regardless of the recording quality, and listen to it happily. The Cosecant is an amazing DAC. It has renewed my digital listening experience, and made digital listening pleasurable. It has moved it closer to my ideal of the vinyl sound.
this brings me to my thoughts regarding how we listen to music, and how that effects how we rate different components on our systems, and perhaps even picks our components for us. I listen for the music. I love music. I do not care if the soundstage is 1 foot narrower with one piece of equipment versus another. I care if that piece of equipment produces music that connects with my soul. Some have scoffed at my choice of vinyl playback at the moment, a bare bones stock SL1200 and a Bellari VP130, I can almost hear them laughing over in the vinyl asylum now... But you know what, in the musicality and emotional involvement department, it kicks ass. The Bellari with its Sovtek tube is MUSICAL. I am positive there are devices for sale that would blow it out of the water technically. But I am not listening for the numbers...
So it is with the Cosecant, with the added benefit being it is ALSO technically brilliant. It kicks ass at being MUSICAL.
Just some thoughts from my Vicodin addled brain...

Here's the thing, Doctor. I would describe what moves me and motivates me in my listening very similar to the way you just described your passion for music. And my equipment choices for that listening are the exact opposite.
Viva la difference.

... more and more opinions.
The best and worst of the web!
But I will always choose expansive over contractive(???)/reductive (although I am probably as guilty of the latter as anyone!).
I do continue to find it amazing how much fun you can have with this stuff.
And the digital world has opened up a LOT of very good options... and I am not knocking vinyl, but the juke box options of something like a SB have never been available before.
People used to say I jumped up and changed discs too often and the gaps in the music were disruptive.
Now with my SB Duet I can seamlessly programme music as I want without moving more than a couple of fingers... ;-)))

I agree wholeheartedly that the PC/Digital music integration is a great thing.
I also think that all the available options are also good for US, the people that buy this stuff. We all are individuals, with differing tastes, expectations, and needs. A restrained or constrained marketplace would not be as interesting, or fulfilling for all of us as one that has lots of options at all levels.

Thats my point. And I think something we should all remember when participating here.

I'm with you AD. I don't really care if the DAC is USB, Firewire, AES, big, small, silver, yellow, or green. It's all about the musical experience.
I hope you are feeling better. I was placed on Thorazine today as I'm going nuts waiting for the Denominator ESS Sabre 32 DAC module for my Crimson.
we should all be so lucky :)
it may be time to get a glass of your favorite beverage, and put on some soothing music Mercman...
